A 40-year-old man from Toronto, Canada was sentenced to serve 10 years in federal prison Monday after he recruited couriers to smuggle MDMA, also known as ecstasy, and Canadian marijuana to a man in Massachusetts.

David Nguyen was sentenced in a Boston federal court after he previously pleaded guilty to one count each of conspiracy to distribute ecstasy and marijuana.

He was also sentenced for one count of money laundering conspiracy, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Authorities said from February 2010 to March 2012, Nguyen worked with others to smuggle marijuana and ecstasy to Joshua Rabinovitch in Salem. Rabinovitch sold the drugs in the United States and sent cash back to Nguyen and another Canadian man identified as Gurshuran Singh.

Rabinovitch sent $240,000 back to the two men through a courier used in the smuggling scheme.

Shivinder Kanwal was recruited to drive 15 kilos of MDMA to Rabinovitch in March 2012. Another man, Adeel Bhutta, picked up the cash from Rabinovitch.

Nguyen was indicted in January 2014 and arrested in Canada in May 2014. He surrendered himself to United States authorities in October. Rabinovitch was sentenced to 24 months in prison for his role smuggling ring.

Authorities said Bhutta was sentenced to 28 months in prison. Singh and Kanwal have both pleaded guilty to charges in connection with the drug and money-laundering ring and will be sentenced in 2017.
